Highlights from 2026 Monterey County Safe and Healthy Schools and Communities Coalition Leadership & Child Abuse Prevention Council Leadership Breakfast

Community members and advocates gathered at One Main Street at the end of April for the annual Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) Breakfast. This year, CAPC of Monterey County is proud to honor recipients whose dedication to prevention and early intervention is making a tangible difference in our community.

Honoring the Pathways to Safety Team

The first award of the morning went to the Pathways to Safety program, specifically recognizing the incredible work of Oralia Dominguez, Elizabeth Aguilar, and Stephanie Robinson. Pathways to Safety is a vital early intervention initiative that shifts the focus from reaction to resolution. By addressing the underlying causes that lead to Child Protective Services (CPS) involvement, the program offers families resources to overcome hurdles before they become crises.

The program is built on the foundation that providing families with the necessary services and solutions allows them to keep their children safe and their family unit strong. This initiative is a testament to the belief that when a community works together, we achieve far more for our children than we ever could alone.

Lifetime Dedication: Dr. Deneen Guss

CAPC was also thrilled to honor Dr. Deneen Guss of the Monterey County Office of Education. Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Guss has operated on the fundamental truth that prevention and awareness are the strongest pillars for protecting our community.

Her award recognizes a career-long commitment to student safety and the tireless energy she pours into community collaborations. Dr. Guss has consistently demonstrated that community gathering and collective action is how we are able to move the needle on child safety and advocacy.

The work of these individuals reminds us that protecting children is a collective responsibility. Whether through direct family support or high-level educational leadership, their impact is felt across every corner of Monterey County. We extend a heartfelt congratulations to Oralia, Elizabeth, Stephanie, and Dr. Guss. Thank you for your unwavering heart and your dedication to our mission.
